Johnson C. Smith University has faced several challenges over the past few months, and as the university works to address them, misinformation has been spreading to students across multiple platforms. Several students have shared their concerns, and in some cases, created stories that have been altered and circulated in various ways. Some of these stories include claims that the cost of living is increasing or that there is only one off-campus housing option available. The most recent issues involve mold and trapped air in Greenfield, a freshman girls' residence hall. As a result, several upperclassmen have been relocated to school-provided off-campus housing, while freshman girls move into the upperclassmen residence halls. As a student at Johnson C. Smith University and junior class president, I participated with my fellow SGA E-board members in visiting the off-campus housing apartments. We want to ensure every student feels comfortable and safe in their living space. During our visit to these apartments, we gained a different perspective than what some students have described.
Thanks to the support of Dr. White, the University has selected high-quality apartments in a safe and secure area to accommodate our students. Although some students are required to share a room, our mission is to ensure that every student feels as comfortable as possible. Each off-campus housing option offers its own perks and features that make it stand out. These options include Junction49, Cykel, and NoDa 1 & 2.
Juction49
Junction49 is a 4 bedroom 4 bathroom apartment with a kitchen and a living room. All rooms are fully furnished, and a TV is provided in the living room. The building consists of 5 maintenance people, and if desired, mounting your TV is an option. Junction49 is overall a great place to live, but what makes it stand out are the amenities. It features a pool open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:59 p.m., a gym, study rooms, a mailroom, and a grill. Residents can also enjoy events and movie nights with free food and drinks.
CYKEL
Cykel houses two people in a shared studio-style apartment with a kitchen, bathroom, and a washer and dryer. Amenities that make this apartment stand out include an easily accessible mailroom, vending machines, a bike room with a repair station where residents can rent bikes, a clubroom, and a fitness center. One of the biggest advantages of this housing option is its close proximity to campus.
NoDa 1 & 2
NoDa houses two people in a shared one-bedroom apartment with a kitchen, bathroom, balcony, plenty of closet space, and a washer and dryer. Amenities that make this apartment stand out include a fitness center, mailroom, parking deck, a resort-style pool, and outdoor spaces with a kitchen, lounge area, and a grill.
No matter where you are assigned, we are here to make your transition as smooth as possible. JCSU is working in many areas to help our university grow, but it is essential that we pour back into our school, our peers, and our community to preserve the culture that was built long ago at Smith.
