On Nov. 23, student leaders at Johnson C. Smith University attended a business etiquette training dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steak House, hosted by Dr. Toya Corbett. A professional speaker and trainer, Corbett leads programs designed to inspire growth and build strong leadership skills. The dinner focused on professional dining etiquette, effective communication, and strategies for navigating high-stakes situations.

The training brought together members from several campus organizations, including the Strada Scholars Program, the Student Government Association Executive Board, and Royal Court. These groups often represent the university at campus and external events, and the training aimed to help participants strengthen their professional presence and prepare for interactions beyond the university. By bringing multiple leadership groups together, the dinner allowed students from different roles on campus to work and interact in a professional setting.

University administrators were also in attendance, giving them the opportunity to engage with students and practice collaboration firsthand.

“Million-dollar meals create million-dollar deals,” Corbett said, stressing the importance of proper etiquette and its role in shaping professional opportunities. The dinner gave student leaders the chance to practice these skills and build confidence for future networking and leadership experiences. The event reflected one of the many ways JCSU’s teaching extends beyond the classroom.
