As mental health concerns rise on college campuses nationwide, students at Johnson C. Smith University are finding support through Mellow Minds — a student-led mental health organization working to break stigma and create open spaces for conversations about well-being.

The challenges Mellow Minds addresses mirror a national mental health crisis affecting college campuses across the country.

According to several national reports, suicide is the second-leading cause of death among college students, taking the lives of roughly 1,100 students each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also reported that about 49,476 people died by suicide in the United States in 2022 — a reminder of how widespread the crisis is.

Mellow Minds provides students with mental health resources, coping strategies, and opportunities to engage in open dialogue about emotional well-being. Many students arrive on campus already facing stress, anxiety, or trauma, and the organization offers a structured environment where they can seek guidance, connect with peers, and access support services. The organization also shares information on suicide prevention hotlines, other mental health organizations, and occasionally licensed therapists, aligning with its mission to help lower suicide risk among students. Additionally, Mellow Minds emphasizes diversity and works to ensure that its resources and support are available to all students, recognizing that mental health challenges can affect anyone.

Mellow Minds hosts a variety of events on campus to engage students and promote mental well-being, including mind-matter talks, wellness picnics, fundraisers, affirmation-for-affirmation sessions, and therapy-related events.

Students have shared how Mellow Minds has made a significant impact on their mental health journey. Many noted that the organization’s support system helped them feel less isolated, particularly when they could openly discuss their struggles and past traumas. Students also reported that Mellow Minds encouraged them to prioritize their well-being and seek help when needed. The organization has become an integral part of campus life, helping students manage stress and access mental health resources. Students and campus resources encourage anyone seeking support to reach out to Mellow Minds for guidance and assistance.
